Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire, they asked him again, “Aren’t you one of his disciples?” “I am not,” he said. – John 18:25
Do you know when it is really easy to be a Christian? It is when you are at church with other Christians singing praises to God, hearing a message from God, and fellowshipping with other godly people. It is easy to live our lives as disciples when we are not threatened by the world outside and when we only speak with those who are in agreement with us. But what happens when we leave the confines of our spiritual home and find ourselves confronted with the world of the skeptic, the unbeliever, and the person who does not know or care about Jesus Christ? Do we, like Peter claim “I am not His disciple”?
Unfortunately, experience tells me that many of us do exactly that. There is that fearful and unsavory duality that many of us live with where we claim Christ, yet then disclaim Him when the circumstances dictate. We are disciples when the conditions are appropriate and devils when they are not. And while I am counting on God’s grace to see us through, I must admit that there is a part of me that lives with the fear of facing a God with whom we have so distanced ourselves when the going got rough. There is a darkness present within us that must be repeatedly eradicated by the light of Jesus Christ if we are ever going to live as full-fledged disciples. We need to invite His presence into our lives
PRAYER THOUGHT: Father, may my commitment to you be unwavering. May my faith stay strong.
“To be a mere nominal Christian, and go to church,
is cheap and easy work. But to hear Christ’s voice,
and follow Christ, and believe in Christ, and confess
Christ, requires much self-denial.” ~ J.C. Ryle
“Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan. And Satan answered the LORD, “I have been going back and forth across the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” – Job 1:7 (NLT)
The older I get the more aware I am that Satan is actively roaming this earth. I have no special insight into this matter, or a revelation from God. Perhaps it could be chalked up to life experience, seeing the havoc the enemy wreaks upon humankind. The Accuser spends his time watching, waiting, and pouncing upon anyone whom he can influence to do his evil bidding, or to hold his hands over their ears to keep them from hearing a word from God.
I have come to believe that the warfare we are engaged in is so real, and such a constant in our lives, that we often don’t recognize it due to over familiarity. Those who claim to see devils at every turn are accused of being religious fanatics or fools. Yet, perhaps what we have so easily dismissed as fanaticism is what is the most real. And in our lack of anticipation of Satan’s watchful eye, we have found ourselves standing in his crosshairs, with the unfortunate role of becoming his potential conquest.
As long as this earth continues to turn on its axis, Satan will persist in his work of roaming with a watchful eye on that which he can devour. What we must do, is be ready.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Father, protect me against the evil one. Make me aware of his schemes.
